NPO Saturn and the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade have signed a state contract for an off-shore gas turbine eclectic generator

August 3, 2011 Rybinsk — OAO NPO Saturn has signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade to develop the technology to build an off-shore gas turbine electrical generator with a capacity of 8 mW and an operational lifetime of up to 100,000 hours, on the basis of a civilian-use Russian marine gas turbine engine. The company won a competition in June of this year for the right to sign this state contract, within the framework of the targeted federal program ‘Development of civil marine technology up to 2016’.

The new contract is the next logical step in the work to create a civilian marine (ship) long-life, multi-fuel, 8 mW gas turbine engine, carried out by Saturn for the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade.

In this way, OAO NPO Saturn continues its work to create a line of highly economical, standardized marine and general industrial gas turbine engines with capacity from 4 to 10 mW, and gas turbine units for various purposes, based on those engines.

At present, the following gas turbine engines (GTEs) from that line have already been created and undergone cross-sectoral/government testing:

— M75RU and M70FRU on-board GTEs for the Russian Navy, with capacities of 7,000 and 14,000 hp

— general industrial GTEs to drive gas transport plants, with capacities of 4, 6.3, and 10 mW.

Saturn is the only Russian company with the experience and the technology to create marine GTEs and build units based on them.

Saturn managing director Ilya Fedorov noted that, “the company is opening new directions with a great deal of potential, in developing highly economical, multi-fuel gas turbine electrical generals to equip marine and on-shore oil and gas and industrial sites, as well as ships with electric propulsion.”

Organizations responsible for planning marine oil and gas operations have already expressed interest in this work.

OAO research and production association Saturn is an engine-building company specializing in the development, production, and aftersales servicing of gas turbine engines for military and civil aviation, electrical generating and gas transport facilities, and military and civil marine vessels. Saturn is part of the United Engine Corporation, itself a subsidiary of OBORONPROM, specializing in managing engine-building assets.

OAO United Industrial Corporation OBORONPROM is a multi-faceted machine-building group founded in 2002. It is part of the Russian Technologies group of companies. Its primary areas of business are helicopters (OAO Russian Helicopters), engine-building (UEC MC), and other assets. In 2010 the corporation’s turnover exceeded 170 billion rubles.
