Mentorship program at Perm Engine Company named the best

At the turn of the year, the Perm municipal administration announced the results of a competition among industrial enterprises called “Mentor of the Year”, organized by the city’s committee on youth policy. Perm Engine Company won in the category ‘Best mentorship program at a Perm company’. This is the second year in a row that the Perm engine-builders have won this honorable award.

Winning Mentor of the Year is the natural result of the company’s work to support and develop mentorship. The most important element is the traditional annual factory competition of mentors, aiming at promoting mentorship as prestigious, and attract the most highly-qualified specialists to the program. On 2011 results, 10 employees were named the best mentors at Perm Engine Company — nine workers and one engineer. The main criteria for selecting the best mentors were the number of workers they had trained, whether they stayed with the company, and their further training. The winners of the factory competition were awarded cash prizes.

“At the Perm Engine Company, mentorship is an important element in our system of personnel development, preparation, and ongoing professional qualifications for young workers,” explains Alexey Mikhalev, Managing Director of Perm Engine Company. Engine building is a high-tech field, with the complexity of production processes and tough requirements for end-product quality as an integral part of it. Therefore the role of mentors, able pass on their rich practical experience to young workers, is incredibly important. To a great extent, the period of time needed by the workers and specialists for picking up the specifics of production and adaptation within the working environment, depends on these people. And in turn the company aims to support its mentors fully — they are regularly offered additional training, receive monthly bonuses on top of their normal wages, and other types of material reward.
