23rd Saturn Youth Rally

Saturn held its annual winter youth rally at the Chyornaya Rechka retreat near Rybinsk. This, the 23rd rally, was opened on February 23rd, Defenders of the Fatherland Day. Twenty-three teams vied with one another over the course of three days for victory and the Andrey Savin Cup — named for a person who did a great deal to develop the company’s youth policies.

Saturn’s Youth Rally has long been an open event for representatives from companies in the aviation industry and other partners in the United Engine Corporation. Participants have come from Rybinsk, Yaroslavl, Moscow, Lytkarino, and even Komsomolsk-on-Amur. The Rybinsk teams represent Saturn and its subsidiaries. Traditionally, the rally includes teams from the Rybinsk State Aviation and Technical University and OAO Saturn — Gas Turbines. Moscow guests always include representatives from Saturn affiliates — the Lyulki Center and the Lytkarinsky Machine Plant, as well as partner companies including Sukhoy Civil Aircraft and FGUP NPTs Salyut. VTB Bank — a Saturn business partner and general sponsor of the event — also entered its own team. And of course, the rally organizers noted that for the first time the rally welcomed a team from the Gagarin aviation production facility in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

“The experience was just great,” gushed members of the Komsomolsk-on-Amur team, taking part in the rally for the first time. “We are so glad that we made it to Rybinsk, to the rally, more than 8,000 kilometers! We chose a team of the very best, to do the best we could. It includes the organizers of our own rally. That’s why one of our goals is to watch, learn, gather information, and return home with new ideas.”

Saturn HR director Leonid Ivanov, chairman of the organizing committee for the 23rd youth rally, noted: “The rally is like a concentrated reflection of the corporate spirit. When Lyulka-Saturn merged with Rybinsk Engines back in 2001, many of our colleagues wondered how we would be able to function as a single company. And I think that the day that teams from our new Moscow affiliates — Lyulka and Lytkarinsky Machine Plant — came to the rally, that was the day that Saturn was really consolidated. Today these teams are not just participating in the rally, but really feel at home. The rally culture is expanding and bringing together more and more people.”

Saturn’s director of production Viñtor Polyakov: “I was invited to the rally as an honoured guest. But I don’t want to be honoured, I want to be down there with you, the young aviation specialists, who hold our sector’s future in your hands. I thought a long time about how to address rally participants — ‘sirs’, ‘comrades’, and so on — but settled on ‘colleagues’. Saturn is a high-tech company and this is where we find like-minded people — people who have been drawn to technology. I wish you all drive, happiness, and success in your work.”

The creative competitions at Saturn’s 23rd Youth Rally were all on a single theme — highlighting the Year of Russian History. The sports program was as always rich and varied. As Natalia Suvorova, VTB Bank deputy manager, noted, ‘thanks to the organizers, these sporting events are already famous across the Yaroslavl region.

Alexey Molchanyuk, Saturn’s head of social programs and the Head Judge of the rally: ‘We try not to repeat ourselves. All the competitions are new, they might have the same name as previous ones but new content. All the creative competitions are united under a single theme. Even as part of the welcome, each team presented its own history. Some competitions cannot be prepared in advance, the teams only find out about them once at the rally, so it’s a form of impromptu. The sporting program is very full. The hardest competition is the ‘ironman’ — participants cover about 20 km of distance over the course of the day, and on the way they have to complete various tasks, mostly intellectual.

In addition to the main prize and rally champion, we also award the Andrey Savin Cup. This cup is passed on from winner to winner. And the teams have developed a sort of understanding among themselves that this is the real prize. It is awarded for joint victory in the rally’s three main competitions — the Captains’ Competition, Home Work, and Ironman.

At the 23rd rally, the Andrey Savin Cup was awarded for the third time to SV-Show (Saturn subdepartments team). The overall winner, awarded the cup and rally grand prize, was Stars & Stakhanovtsy (Saturn production director team), second place went to SV-Show, and third to Successors (Saturn Gas Turbines).

As always, the general level of competition was excellent and the organizers ensured a wide range of participation — from social programs management to youth committees, sports centers and Saturn’s trade union committee, as well as the Yaroslavl regional department of the Russian Engineering Union and the business partner and general sponsor of the rally, VTB Bank.
