Saturn Confirms it has Met all Requirements for an Employer Credibility Certificate

March 15, 2012, Rybinsk - On March 14 Saturn hosted a visit by the head of the State Labor Inspectorate for the Yaroslavl Region. After visiting Saturnís production, testing, and training facilities, and meeting with the company leadership and labor union organizations to address the issue of complying with labor legislation, the authorities confirmed that Saturn fulfils all the requirements to secure an employer credibility certificate.

The credibility certificate was awarded to Saturn in 2010 to acknowledge the company as voluntarily complying with the standards set out in the labor law. This check-up by the State Labor Inspectorate confirmed the companyís eligibility for the certificate, and demonstrated that it makes economic sense for the company to fulfil the requirements for industrial, fire-suppression, and environmental impact safety and to support a high level of on-the-job safety.

In 2011 alone, the company received 10 awards for its work in this area. In 2011, Saturn was among the best companies in Russia and Kazakhstan for its ecology-energy protection rating, it won a regional competition and Profavia inspection entitled The company with the best provision for employees of protective clothing, shoes, and personal protective equipment, and was named a Leader in Environmental Protection in Russia 2011.

In recent years, Saturn has implemented a range of changes for technological modernization and technical re-tooling of production facilities. New production divisions have been brought online, there is a steady stream of new, next-generation metal-working tools coming out, and the technological level is objectively high and in the opinion of many, is on par with international standards. Modern production capacities allow the company not only to improve labor efficiency, but also to significantly reduce negative effects on personnel and on the environment.

ďAs an employer, Saturn guarantees to respect rights of the workers. The credibility certificate is confirmed,Ē says Head of the Yaroslavl Regional Division of the State Labor Inspectorate Yevgeny Maslennikov. "The companyís new production division, high-tech equipment, and modern administrative facilities make a distinctly good impression. The company has achieved noteworthy success in labor protection. Itís worth noting the fact that in 2010 (since the certificate was issued), Saturn has not had a single serious accident or incident. The number of cases referred to the labor inspectorate from company employees continues to fall year-on-year. All of this is the result of a great deal of hard work ó both by the employer as represented by the company administration and the heads of divisions, and by the employees themselves taking greater care in looking after their health in the situation they see that their employer cares about them too.

One of the aims of the visit to Saturn was for the labor inspectorate to get feedback from company employees. ďItís very important,Ē says Deputy Head of the Yaroslavl Regional Division of the State Labor Inspectorate Alexander Lyand, ďthat people know where to turn with their problems and issues arising in the course of their job, in those cases where we can, we offer qualified help ó consult them, explain their rights, and if necessary, come out to make an inspection.

We have seen how Saturn has organized a system for employees to bring claims and issues before their employers. We are satisfied with the way this system works, and I think that we need to pass on this experience to other companies in our Region.Ē

According to the Chief Engineer of Saturn Vladimir Stogov, today the company is setting itself new tasks in labor protection. This means a transition from a compensatory, loss-making model of labor protection management to a modern system of professional risk management.

We consider our efforts to create an integrated system of management for the company to be a strategic priority, and will include ecological management (ISO 14001), safety management (OHSAS 18001), quality management (ISO 9001) and social standards (SA 8000), an additional aspect giving us a competitive advantage that helps to ensure the companyís success going forward.

Saturn is currently working on building a functional system of ecological management meeting ISO 14001 standards, getting ready for certification in 2012. Certificates for BS OHSAS 18001 and SA 8000 and planned for 2013-2015.
