The UMPO center for technologicalcompetency in casting prepares for state inspection

UMPO is continuing work to create a center for technological competency on aluminumand titanium casting (CTC AT). At present, in cooperation with Ufaaviaproject, work is ongoing to plan the foundry shop, documentation is being prepared to undergo state inspection, and the technology for organizing production is being developed.

Under the United Engine Corporationís plans, by 2016 the CTC AT should be fully meeting the needs of the corporationís companies, as well as those of other factories in the Oboronprom group in terms of aluminum and titanium casting. The total amount of investment in the project will be more than 5 billion rubles.

ďSubstantial cash injections are conditioned by the immensity of this project and the need to implement modern technologiesinto production,Ē said CTC AT director Amir Subkhankulov. "So the aluminum casting sector will use casting under low pressure, which allows getting sound castings free of foreign matter. Regarding the titanium casting, we face the task of increasing the diameter of castings to 1.5 meters. Previously, dimensions reached 900 mm, but now the demands of the air and space sector have grown. For example, for the PD-14 engine, the nodes of which are made at UMPO, they need castings with a diameter of up to 2.1 meters.

Once operating at its planned capacity, the CTC AT will allow UMPO to take a leading position in the domestic aviation industry.

Ufa Engine Industrial Association (UMPO) is one of the largest producers of aviation engines in Russia. Its turnover in 2011 was 21,065 million rubles. Its primary areas of business are the production, service, and repair of turbo-jet aviation engines and gas turbine units, as well as production and repair of helicopter technology units. UMPO is part of the United Engine Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of OBORONPROM handling engine-building assets.

United Industrial Corporation OBORONPROM is a multi-faceted machine-building group founded in 2002. It is part of the Russian Technologies group of companies. Its primary areas of business are helicopters (Russian Helicopters), engine-building (UEC), and other assets. The companyís takings in 2011 exceeded 229 billion rubles.
