SATURN and VIAM sign Agreement

On December 11, 2012, the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM) was visited by a delegation from NPO Saturn, headed by Managing Director Ilya Fedorov.

As part of the visit, the guests saw the production and testing complexes, laboratories, certified low-tonnage production, and the research center for high-gradient technology for applying monocrystal blades.

VIAM’s General Director, RAS academic Yevgeny Nikolaevich Kablov, spoke about VIAM’s new developments, the institute’s prospects, and strategic development of materials and technologies up to 2030.

Yevgeny Kablov and Ilya Fedorov signed an Agreement on cooperation between NPO Saturn and VIAM. According to the document, the parties have agreed to create a joint scientific-technical policy on developing and implementing prospective materials and technologies for gas turbine engines. The Agreement details the formation within an innovation territorial cluster ‘Gas turbine building and power machine building’, a certified research laboratory, as well as joint work in a number of areas. In addition the Agreement envisages that VIAM will train Saturn specialists, and that joint advanced R&D work will attract input from major universities (the Bauman Moscow State Technical University and the Solovyev Rybinsk State Aviation Technical University).

As Yevgeny Kablov said after the Agreement was signed, “this Agreement will enable the development of domestic engine-building, as well as the expansion of the market for new materials and technologies for application on innovative projects in engine-building.”

According to Ilya Fedorov, “by signing this Agreement for multi-year cooperation with VIAM we have expanded research, testing, and implementation of new prospective materials and technologies in building gas turbine engines, which is an integral part of building Saturn’s scientific and technical reserves and those of the entire Russian aviation industry.”

NPO Saturn is an engine-building company specializing in the development, production, and aftersales servicing of gas turbine engines for military and civil aviation, electrical generating and gas transport facilities, and military and civil marine vessels. Saturn is part of the United Engine Corporation.

All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM) has the status of State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation. VIAM is a leading scientific research organization in the military-industrial complex, including 36 laboratories, testing centers, experimental bases, and affiliates: the Akomov Gelendzhiksky Center for Climatic Testing at VIAM, the Voskresensky experimental technology center for special materials, and the Ulyanovsk scientific technical center.

The Institute fills orders on developing and delivering a wide range of metallic and non-metallic materials, coatings, technological processes and equipment, methods to provide corrosion protection, as well as ways to control subsequent products, intermediate products, and products based on these. VIAM realizes its own developments not only in the military sphere, but also in aviation and machine building, the space industry, power generation, construction, medicine, and other fields.
