UEC begins testing VK-2500, the first helicopter engine from Russian parts

On December 18, 2012, at Shuvalovo at the production facility of Klimov, a United Engine Corporation subsidiary, the company began testing VK-2500 helicopter engine, the first to be built entirely of Russian parts.

As part of implementation of the development strategy for the Russian aviation industry, in 2013 Klimov plans to launch 50 VK-2500 engines made from Russian parts, and by 2015 the production volume will increase to 500 per year.

“Establishing mass production of VK-2500 engine in accordance with the state program of import substitution will enable us to achieve independence for the Russian helicopter-building industry from foreign producers of engines and parts,” said UEC General Director Vladislav Masalov.

In addition, on December 18, 2012 as part of the implementation of the project Rebuilding and technical retooling of the Klimov design and production complex, the company has launched a new production facility into operation.

“The new production will meet the highest standards and will include a range of innovative solutions, allowing us to create a world-class center of gas turbine engine construction in St. Petersburg,” said Masalov.

Klimov is a part of the United Engine Corporation (UEC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of OBORONPROM. It is a leading Russian developer of full-cycle gas turbine engines, with its own design bureau, production facilities, and experimental lab. The company develops, manufactures, and services engines for helicopters, as well as jet engines for fighter aircraft. Klimov’s key competency as a developer is the design of turboshaft engines for Milya and Kamov helicopters (Mi-8/Mi-17, Mi-28 ‘Nochnoi Okhotnik’, the Ka-50 ‘Chernaya Akula’ and Ka-52, as well as the new Mi-38). Klimov engines cover 90% of Russia’s helicopter fleet, and are used in the special flight division Rossiya, for helicopters carrying the Russian president. The turboshaft engines developed by Klimov are used in the current MiG-29 and MiG-35 (under development).
