The prospective gas generator made using NPO Saturnís Rybinsk design bureauís 77 development will enable the creation of a new family of aviation and industrial application engines, meeting all requirements of next-generation engines

April 29, 2013, Rybinsk ó The new innovative development from NPO Saturn ó the E70/8RD industrial dual-fuel GTE for marine use ó was demonstrated at the end of April as part of the UEC scientific-technical council on matters of reliability, operation, and potential applications for 2.5-10 mW gas turbine engines, which was held in Rybinsk.

In December 2012 the E70/8RD engine successfully underwent qualification testing and is was assigned the designation ĎO1í, which in accordance with inter-governmental standards denotes the final stage of work on the prototype, and transition to mass production. The E70/8RD GTE was created on the basis of the GTE70FRU and is the long-term development of the GTE model line, created on the basis of the modular gas generator (product 77) developed by NPO Saturnís Rybinsk design bureau 1. The effective efficiency coefficient of the E70/8RD for gas fuel is more than 34 %, and the specific fuel consumption is less than 0.155 kg/hp. The primary operational characteristics of the E70/8RD engine developed by Saturn is the dual-fuel combustion chamber with automatic transition from gas fuel to diesel, and vice versa. The control system, made up of a block of electronic components, the block of liquid fuel system units, and also the block of units of the gas fuel system, were developed and manufactured by Star.

At present Saturn is using the E70/8RD engine as a basis for making a ship gas turbogenerator with 8 mW capacity (SGTG-8) ó testing is planned for November 2013. Possible applications for the SGTG-8 are as power units onboard ships and on-shore infrastructure.

According to Saturn chief designer Yury Shmotin, ďIndustrial engines created on the basis of gas generator 77 have a lot of potential and their parameters are comparable to the best foreign engines. The gas generator 77 created by the Rybinsk design bureau 1 in the 1990s, still has a lot of potential. For example, the high-pressure compressor on the 77 had an efficiency coefficient of more than 85 % with increasing pressure level to more than 12. In the 2000s, Saturn did an amount of work on using the gas generator 77 to create a modular potential gas generator for a new family of aviation and industrial engines. The following parameters have been achieved: compressor pressure level of more than 18, 30 % improvement in emissions from the combustion chamber, and the lifespan has been testing experimentally. I can say with confidence that Saturnís modular gas generator today meets the needs of next-generation engines.Ē
