UAC and UEC sign contract for delivery of PS-90A76 engines for Il-76MD-90A aircraft

The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) and the United Engine Corporation (UEC), part of state corporation Rostech, have signed a contract for delivery of PS-90A76 engines for the Il-76MD-90A (Il-476) aircraft. It concerns 39 machines, which UAC will deliver to the Russian Ministry of Defence under agreements reached between the parties last year. The transfer of aircraft to the customer will take place in 2014, although the first engines will be delivered to UAC by the end of 2013. In total under the contract between the corporations, 156 engines will be delivered. The contract is worth more than 30 billion rubles in total.

The document was signed by Mikhail Pogosyan, the President of the United Aircraft Corporation and Vladislav Masalov, the General Director of the United Engine Corporation.

“We are expanding our cooperation with UEC — one of our key partners in working to fulfil the state armaments program,” said UAC President Mikhail Pogosyan. “The contract we have signed today will allow UEC to get up to large-scale production in its civilian engine line as well.”

“The contract signed today will allow UEC to begin production of a large range of engines for civil aviation,” said UEC General Director Vladislav Masalov at the signing ceremony. “Thanks to agreements with UAC we can also build efficient long-term cooperation with our suppliers of units, parts, and raw materials.” The PS-90A-76 engine, certified in 2003, significantly improves on performance characteristics of the Il-76MD-90A aircraft. The engine meets not only existing but also upcoming standards and ICAA requirements concerning noise and harmful emissions, allowing the aircraft to work anywhere in the world.

The flight program as part of factory tests for modernizing the Il-76MD-90A has been successfully completed. As part of these tests, the technical flight characteristics of the new aircraft were confirmed, which at 15-17 % exceed the specifications of the Il-76MD. At the moment the aircraft is beginning flights for the program of state testing by the Russian Ministry of Defence.

Mass production of the aircraft is being developed at the Aviastar-SP factory in Ulyanovsk, part of UAC. At present the factory and hundreds of factories supplying parts are filling UAC orders to launch the first batch of Il-76MD-90A aircraft.

“This agreement practically completes our work with systems and components suppliers under the contract for delivery of 39 Il-76MD-90A aircrafts,” said UAC-Transport Airplanes General Director Sergei Velmozhin after the signing. “This allows us moving forward — the first airplane is already in the final assembly workshop at the Aviastar-SP factory.”

The PS-90A-76 engine will enable 17-19 % reduction in fuel consumption, relative to the D-30KP-2, and will increase flight distances by 25 % (800-1,000 km). And thanks to the Perm-built engine, the aircraft’s commercial haulage will also increase, by 15 % (up to 60 tons).

To date, 74 PS-90A-76 engines have been made, which are in operation on aircraft Il-76TD-90, Il-76MF, A-50 (early radar warning and management on the basis of the Il-76), by airlines in four countries (Russia, Azerbaijan, India, and Jordan). During this time, the engine has in practice confirmed its high operational characteristics. The fleet of PS-90A-76 engines has worked a total of nearly 190,000 hours. The leading engine as of July 1, 2013, had worked 10,646 hours (2,889 flight cycles) without repair.

Altogether over 400 PS-90A engines have been made. 345 of them are currently in operation. The total accumulated working hours are 3.2 million.
