A worthy Pavel Solovyev prize

In July 2013 Aviadvigatel announced the results of the traditional competition for the Pavel Alexandrovich Solovyev prize.

A total of 33 works were submitted to the competition committee — 22 in design categories and 11 in production categories.

The first-class P.A. Solovyev prize in design was awarded to the project ‘Developing and implementing a geographically-dispersed system of information support for the project PD-14 engine for the MS-21 aircraft’ (authors: S.V. Bormalev, V.E. Abramchuk, D.A. Pryakhin, A.A. Chemus, and K.N. Pimenov).

The project was aimed at creating a system for sharing project data within Teamcenter Multisite Collaboration. Today this system is used around the world to share design documentation, thereby supporting creation of project data between companies participating in the cooperation: Aviadvigatel, UMPO, Motor, NPO Saturn, Salyut, PMZ, Mashinostroitel, Technology, and VASO.

The second-class P.A. Solovyev prize in design was awarded to the project ‘Implementing a modern concept of building automated information and measurement systems at Aviadvigatel test facilities’ (authors: Kh.Kh. Fatykhov, Yu.V. Meluzov, I.Yu. Akhmetzyanov, and Yu.V. Ognev).

Creating the concept and processing requirements for building a modern automated system for measurement and managing stand tests of engines was achieved using the achievements of leading foreign firms (MDS, Snecma), as well as the experience in creating similar systems. On the basis of the chosen concept, automated systems for testing gas generators and the PD-14 engine on Aviadvigatel stands were developed and implemented, as well as for testing the high-pressure compressor in upcoming aviation engines.

In the process of testing the gas generator, the number of registered and calculated parameters exceeded 4,500, and in the course of testing the PD-14 prototype the number of registered parameters was 6,000.

The third-class P.A. Solovyev prize in design was awarded to the project ‘Creating a scientific educational center for aviation composite technologies’ (authors: M.A. Grinev, A.A. Zavadsky, M.A. Koshkarev, S.V. Troshin, and A.A. Tomilov).

The scientific educational center for aviation composite technologies was created on the base of the Perm National Research Polytechnic University. The center’s main tasks are to develop new composite technologies and to train specialists for work in Perm region companies.

Comparing modern analogues in foreign companies (Boeing centers at Sheffield University, the Nimitech center at the Tavr University, the Compositec personnel training center at the University of Le Bourg du Lac), it is important to noted that technical provision at the Perm scientific educational center of aviation composite technology and the format in which it functions meet world standards for the development of science and technology.

The first-class P.A. Solovyev prize in production was awarded to the project ‘Implementing optical contact-free photogrammetric method for determining clearance and linear deformation in a full-size aviation gas turbine engine using the Tritop system’ (authors: Yu.V. Sorokin, T.V. Baidina, and A.A. Shirinkin).

As of today this system for controlling parts and units in the engine has become an essential tool both at the planning stage and in the process of engine mass production. Implementing a method of contact-free determination of clearance and deformation will solve the following tasks:

The second-class P.A. Solovyev prize in production was awarded to the project ‘Developing technology to manufacture high-pressure turbine nozzle vanes from VKNA-type inter-metallic alloys’ (Authors: S.S. Rostovshchikov, V.A. Yeliseev, M.E. Markova, D.A. Bulychev, I.A. Barkova).

In the process of developing technology, several methods of collecting model blocks were tested, with various parameters of temperature of casting the forms. They developed and piloted technological parameters allowing minimal defects in the product on casting cracks, and guaranteeing quality with LYUM-1 control. Parts prepared with this technology have successfully undergone testing in a gas generator and prototype PD-14 engine.

The third-class P.A. Solovyev prize in production was awarded to the project ‘ Developing software and methods to automate calculation of actual area of passage of turbine blades (inter-blade channels on the baldes) on data from testing complexes ATOS II and ATOS III’ (authors: A.V. Mikishev, A.A. Shirinkin, M.V. Shiryaev).

Implementing the methods and software to automate calculation will enable us to get the actual passage area of turbine blades between the inter-blade channels, and not just fluctuation of several main sizes of calculation. In addition, the new method with associated software allowed us to significantly shorten time for such calculations (4-6 fold).

At present Aviadvigatel specialists are working to create a package of processing for calculation of the whole complement of blades, with automatic generation of the measurement protocol.

In addition to determining the winners, the competition committee also made the decision to name A.N. Sazhenkova, head of the Aviadvigatel measurement department, an Honored Winner of the P.A. Solovyev Prize.


The prize and title named after Pavel Alexandrovich Solovyev are awarded by Aviadvigatel to mark his service, to support the traditions of the Perm design school, and to ensure continuity of generations.

The P.A. Solovyev Prize is awarded in two categories — design and production — for works on creating and implementing designs and technologies across a broad range of the latest technology in planning, manufacture, launch, and operation of aviation engines.

The title Honored Winner of the P.A. Solovyev Prize is awarded to Aviadvigatel employees for many years of productive labour in the company, managing developments and production. This title may be awarded to employees of other organizations for joint work that enables the creation and production of designed products.
