Perm Engine Company setting up lean production

Perm Engine Company has undergone an audit of its production system. The head of the audit group, deputy managing director for development of production systems at NPO Saturn, Ilya Pautov, said that at present out of 10 companies within the United Engine Corporation (UEC), there are four leaders in the development of production systems (DPS)  Ufa Engine Industrial Association, Perm Engine Company, NPO Saturn, and Saturn Gas Turbines.

The audit of the production system takes place once per year. The previous monitoring was conducted at PMZ in September 2012, and the plan based on the results of last years audit of production systems has been executed to 97.3%.

Among positives, the auditors mentioned the practice of work exchanges of specialists from various services to the production system development division for three months. In addition to carrying out projects to increase efficiency, Perm Engine Company is also engaged in the important question of establishing a lean thought process among its employees.

The company effectively uses the practice of project planning in transforming production systems. At present there are 24 projects being implemented, of which 20 are in production departments. According to the committee, PMZ is the UEC leader on management planning.

There was special mention of the visualisation of information in particular the indicators for assembly line work: all the information presented at the stands is topical and reflects the current situation. The level of culture of production at PMZ is also at quite a high level in comparison with other UEC companies. There is a systematic analysis of the downtime of automated equipment.

On the negative side, the plants production systems were found to have an insufficient level of automation, old equipment, and buildings and facilities in a state of deterioration.

With the aim of increasing the efficiency of production systems, the committee recommended organizing additional training for subdivision managers, using the experience of NPO Saturn. The auditors also recommended intensifying activities on implementing the 5S system and on submitting suggestions for improvements.

Perm Engine Company (PMZ) mass produces aviation engines for civil and military applications, as well as industrial gas turbine units for power stations and gas transportation.

PMZ is a part of the United Engine Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of OBORONPROM specializing in engine-building assets.

OBORONPROM is a multi-faceted machine-building group of companies, founded in 2002. It is a part of the Russian Technologies group of companies. Its primary activities are helicopter building (Russian Helicopters) and engine-building (UEC).

Its 2012 turnover was 931 billion rubles, with net profit of 38.5 billion rubles. It paid a total of 109 billion rubles in taxes at all budget levels.
